在“第八届中国肿瘤内科大会”上,Murphy博士作了题为“Cancer Prevention and Early Detection:An Opportunity & Challenge for China”的报告,并于会后接受了《肿瘤瞭望》的采访。
<Oncology Frontier>:Why do you think cancer prevention and early detection are clear opportunities for China?
Dr. Murphy: Taking a look around China, you have to ask two questions. Firstly, do you see people smoking? And do you see it often and everywhere? The answer is of course, yes. Secondly, when you actually ask chronic smokers in China, i.e. people who are addicted to the addictive drug aspects of tobacco, if they want to stop, 70% have no inclination to stop. In fact, they have reasons to want to smoke. This comes through lack of education about the dangers of tobacco. Most don’t know or don’t believe that tobacco is dangerous. There is a lot of education to be done as it is evidenced-based that tobacco kills. Tobacco is also a cultural imperative in China. It is part of Chinese guanxi. If you and I meet, I would offer you a cigarette in friendship and to acknowledge your friendliness, you accept. What a terrible thing for friends to do to one another. But it is not seen in that way because of an absence of education and a culture that has grown up around tobacco over a long period of time. When that changes with education and cultural and environmental changes, enlightened government and through bright chief executive officers of multinational and Chinese domestic companies, there will be a major decrease in deaths and all the suffering and the enormous costs that are caused by tobacco. That’s the imperative.
It is also important in terms of diet. The mean body weight in China is gradually increasing. The appearance of fast food is dramatically increasing. Sedentary lifestyles are dramatically increasing as China’s enormous economic revolution continues to roar forward. We have to do this prudently. This industrial revolution that is taking place in China today should not recapitulate the deaths caused by the last industrial revolution in Great Britain and the United States. China should have an industrial revolution that is green and doesn’t cause massive destruction and death as it goes forward. And it can happen. Because of its size and power, whatever China does, the rest of the world will be impacted. The suggestion we are making is that China has extraordinary potential, not just at taking best practices and learning from them and developing them and improving on them in the industrial sense, but in the health promotion sense. It can take the CEO cancer gold standard and culturally adapt it for the Chinese society and Chinese medical profession and convert that into a great economic growth engine that will produce an actual saving in costs.
